PROOF THAT GOD LOVES US

God has given you His Word

By Dr. Foster H. Shannon

When you trust a person, do you believe their word?

Most of the time we do. But men can lie. What about GOD?

Numbers 23:19 tells us that “God is not a man, that he should lie”

He has given us His WORD that He loves us. You can take it to heart. Here’s proof:

1. Proof that we are loved by God

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

2. Proof that by believing in Jesus Christ we have forgiveness of sins, and are in God’s family

“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” ~Ephesians 2:9

“For all who are led by the Spirit are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14)

“it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:16,17)

3. Proof that God made us – and has a job for us

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” ~Ephesians 2:10

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (I Peter 2:9)

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

4. Proof that God will enable us

“Whom the Lord calls, He will also enable” ~Romans 8:30

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (I Corinthians 12:4-7)

5. Proof that we HAVE eternal life in Jesus:

“And this is the record, that God has GIVEN us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has the son has life, and he who does NOT have the son does not have life. These things have I written to you that believe in the name of the son of God, that you may KNOW that you HAVE eternal life, and that you may believe in the name of the son of God.” I John 5: 11-13

“Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.” (I Corinthians 15: 49)

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4)

“…whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be saved” ~ Joel 2:32

6. Proof that God will take care of us:

“My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

“No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, what God has prepared for those who love him.” I Corinthians 2:9)

7. Proof that God wants us to have peace

“Thou dost show me, the path of life; in thy presence there is fullness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27

Don’t be afraid to come to God.

He wants you to come. He’s given you His Word on it. He says,

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

P.S. – Why GOD’S Answers?

As a pastor, I have often been challenged by younger members of my congregations with
questions about how to relate the Bible and God’s words to today’s world.  I find more people today
rejecting Christianity because they believe it not applicable to their lives and is thus, irrelevant.

I suspect some Christians are “straying” since the answers to daily dilemmas and major life
issues are not evident or easily attainable. Perhaps, considering God’s point of view has
become less important for many. And yet, HIS are the only answers that truly give any lasting value to our lives.

How do we find the way?

“Seek and ye SHALL find.

Knock and the door SHALL be opened.

ASK and it SHALL be given.”

Searching for the truth in the Bible can seem like mining for gold.

However, as one who has been mining it’s pages for many years, I have done the digging for you.

An experienced guide, I will help you explore the territory to find it’s riches without getting lost along the way.

For instance, my book, Answering Questions People Ask About Christianity is one of the great tools I have created to help you discover the treasures the Bible offers, as well as a dynamic reference in sharing nuggets of truth with others.

EASTER AND THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS

Christ is RISEN INDEED!

Christ is RISEN, INDEED!

By Dr. Foster H. Shannon

Jesus was illegally arrested by the officers of the Sanhedrin, and unjustly tried before the Roman governor, Pilate. After struggling to find another way to avoid the judicial process, Pilate caved. Pilate had already said that he had found no guilt in Jesus. Yet because of the cries of the crowd, and the threat that Pilate’s failure to act would be reported to Rome—Pilate reluctantly committed Jesus to execution by crucifixion. The soldiers that had stood by the cross reported to Pilate that Jesus was dead.

The body of Jesus was taken by Joseph of Arimathea along with Nicodemus, with Pilate’s permission. On Good Friday he was placed in a new tomb, and a stone was rolled in front of the entrance. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James witnessed this event. A guard was set before the tomb to assure that no one would come and steal the body, and the stone was sealed.

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. An angel from the Lord told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. On the morning of the Sabbath a group of women went to the tomb hoping to complete the burial process. They found the tomb empty. On that Sabbath following the crucifixion, Jesus appeared to a number of his disciples. The disciples went to Galilee to a mountain to which Jesus had directed them. They worshiped him, some initially doubted, but were convinced when they saw him in person.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the crown jewel of Christian witness and theology. The tomb was empty, Jesus could not be found, then he appeared to the women, to two disciples on the way to Emmaus, and in the evening to at least ten of his disciples.

“After his suffering [Jesus] presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.” (Acts 1:3)

The disciples, and many others with them, were convinced that this Jesus who had been killed and confirmed dead had been raised from the dead. Had this not happened there would be no Christianity and no church. The disciples would have returned to Judaism and their former relationships. On the Mount of Olives, the disciples and a crowd witnessed his ascension to heaven. They began proclaiming the resurrection of Christ (at the risk of their lives) and the good news of the salvation that is found through him.

The resurrection confirms the Old Testament. It is the foundation of the New Testament and the Christian Church. It is certainly and undeniable historic fact! With that we may believe in him. With that we may faithfully follow him. With that we may be assured, that when we depart this life, we shall live with him forever.

THE GIFT OF GOD

shepherds see angels

by Dr. Foster H. Shannon

The greatest Christmas gift is Jesus Christ! We are impressed with the gifts which the Magi brought: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts were expensive and impressive. They inspire the giving of gifts during the Christmas season. However, the major giver for Christmas is God the Father, who gave his only begotten Son so that we might have forgiveness of our sins and gain an eternity in his presence.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Gifts are important at Christmas, are they not? Think of how the children look forward to Christmas day and the opening of gifts for which they have longed. Indeed, there are relatively few who are not enticed—and looking forward to receiving a gift at Christmas. We give Christmas gifts out of love. Sometimes we give Christmas gifts to impress. Some may even give Christmas gifts to outdo someone else in their giving. The purchase of Christmas gifts has become an important factor in our economy. We all know of Black Friday: the Friday after Thanksgiving, when the department stores claim to begin making a profit for the year. The commotion regarding Christmas has become an important economic factor for many businesses.

We read in Romans 3:24,

“…they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,” “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God…” (Ephesians 2:8)

We note that gifts are given without any expectation of payment on the part of the receiver. Thus, when we speak of salvation we see it as an act of God’s grace. We are undeserving; unable to repay!

Much of the Christmas music that we cherish and enjoy reminds us of the greatness and glory of our God—and that the true riches are to be found in him. There is a lesson from the gospel of John, chapter four, when Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman near the well.

“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink’, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)

“Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the new-born King;

Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!

Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies;

With the angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings,

Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die,

Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to Give them second birth.”

CHRISTMAS IS A TIME TO HUMBLY RECEIVE THE GREAT GIFT THAT GOD GIVES US

IN JESUS CHRIST—AND TO EXPRESS OUR ADORATION OF HIM.
