The Declaration of Independence

By Dr. Foster H. Shannon

It is wonderful to recognize the truth that God cares about us. He wants us to live in harmony with our Savior and each other. He cares about the USA (and, of course, other nations). The United States affirmed our dependence upon God in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” ‘And, for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” ~Psalm 33:12

“First of all , then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.” I Timothy 2:1,2

“The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families and their fathers’ houses, from thirty years old up to fifty years old, all years old up to fifty years old, all who can enter the service, to do the work on the tent of meeting. This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: the most holy things.” Numbers 4:1-4

I recognized that what follows is difficult, but I cannot ignore the matter of abortions. I must respond to what the Bible teaches about God’s concern for children. We find that concern in both the New Testament and in the Old Testament. God excoriates those who dispose of their children by offering them as sacrifices. “You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Molech, and to profane the name of your God.”

Leviticus 18:21 “There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,” Deuteronomy 18:10

“Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

The Ten Commandments, number six is, “You shall not kill.”

Babylonian seal of child sacrifice

Sacrificing life on the altar of financial concerns is what they did in Babylon with the killing children in order to please or appease a supernatural being in order to achieve a desired result.  Planned Parenthood performed more than one million abortions in 2016 receiving more than 27 million dollars in US government grants in 2015 and 2016. Is it for ‘social good’, as they declare? What does this program do for children that might have lived? Do they kill children at three months, or four months, or five months, or six months, or to nine months? What drives a person to take the life of an unborn but living child? Is it killing in ‘self defense’ to save the life of the mother? Or because the child would be in the way of career plans, or cause an extra expense of money or labor? Planning your life is one thing. Sacrificing someone else’s so yours will be easier is quite another. Who gives life in the first place?

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

“It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me,” Jeremiah 27:5.

“[Jesus] was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.” John 1:10

The teachings and examples of Jesus

He gives us churches and teachers and pastors to lead us to salvation in Jesus Christ, and to encourage us in living a life in fellowship with our Saviour

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world , not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:16,17

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us.” Ephesians 1:7,8

“Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you; and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another, and to all men, as we do to you, so that he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.” ~II Thessalonians 3:11-13

“In your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence and keep your conscience clear,” ~Hebrews 3:15

“Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades.” ~Hebrews 1:9

Let us praise God for his goodness to us and for our hope for the world. Let us read the Bible and pray every day. Let us sing to his glory! If you are on the Lord’ side, you are on the right side!

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” ~Hebrews 12:1,2

Blessings to YOU!
